The President of Uganda Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the first Lady who also doubles as the minister of Education and Sports Hon Janet Kataha Museveni have inspected the work at Hoima Sports stadium in as part of the activities during his PDM assessment tour in Bunyoro sub-region.
The stadium is one of the key infrastructure projects in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
The President congratulated the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements that will boost the local economy. I also encourage the private sector to contribute by providing additional services, such as hotels and other amenities.
“We had planned to develop Akii-Bua Stadium before others. However, after our bid for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was successful, we made a case for the Hoima location. This decision was influenced by the presence of an airport in the area, which we had already begun working on”. The president revealed.

The $129 million multi-sports complex, commissioned by the Ugandan government, officially commenced construction in July 2024, following the signing of the agreement earlier that year.
The stadium will include a seating capacity for 20,000 spectators, a 2,000-seat indoor multi-sports arena, a semi-Olympic-sized swimming pool, a training pitch, and outdoor courts designated for basketball, netball, and volleyball.

The stadium’s construction is expected to be completed within 18 months, with a December 2025 deadline for its inspection by the Confederation of African Football (CAF)
