Protest Turns Punishment!! Kyambogo University Suspends Demonstrating Students

Must read

Kyambogo University is in the spotlight after Vice Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka suspended more than 20 students who took part in recent demonstrations against university surcharges.

The protests, which took place earlier this week, were sparked by what students described as “unfair and unexplained” fees added to their tuition. Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the students rallied across the main campus, demanding answers and immediate reversal of the charges.

In response, the university administration issued suspension letters to several students identified as “ringleaders and active participants” in the protests. Prof. Katunguka defended the decision, stating that the demonstrations disrupted academic activities and violated university regulations on student conduct.

“We cannot allow lawlessness under the guise of freedom of expression,” the VC stated in a press briefing. “There are proper channels to raise concerns. What we saw was unacceptable.”

Student leaders, however, argue that they had exhausted all formal channels before resorting to protest. “This is intimidation,” said one suspended student leader who requested anonymity. “Instead of listening, the administration is silencing us.”

The suspensions have stirred mixed reactions from the public, with some calling for dialogue and others backing the university’s firm stance.

As tensions simmer on campus, it remains unclear whether the suspended students will be reinstated or if further disciplinary actions are in store. Meanwhile, student groups are calling for solidarity and legal support to challenge the suspensions.
