Radical New Bar Appoints Experienced Advocates to Drive Change in Uganda Law Society

Must read

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has announced new appointments to its Council, marking a significant leadership change. Advocate Ssali Babu has been appointed Acting Secretary, while Advocate Lule Alexander will serve as Acting Council Member representing the Central Region. These appointments are effective immediately and will remain in place until the next Annual General Meeting.

The changes follow a resolution at a ULS General Meeting held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, which censured and removed the former officeholders, Phillip Munaabi and Geofrey Turyamusiima, from their positions. The decision was made to ensure effective leadership and maintain the Society’s commitment to integrity and accountability.

Advocate Ssali Babu, a conveyancing and litigation expert, is a partner at Nsubuga K & Co. Advocates. He also serves as Secretary General of the Central Motor Club and is actively involved in community development. Based in Mukono, Adv Babu is known for his corporate social responsibility initiatives that help farming communities fight land grabbing and adapt to climate change. His experience and dedication to the Radical New Bar make him a valuable addition to the ULS Council.

Advocate Lule Alexander, founder and managing partner of Xander Advocates in Masaka, is a respected human rights defender and litigation specialist. Since November 2024, he has led the Greater Masaka Bar, a ULS chapter, bringing together lawyers in the region. Adv Lule gained national recognition for leading a sit-down strike on 16 June 2025, which highlighted judicial understaffing and case backlogs at the Masaka High Court Circuit.

His efforts resulted in a meeting with the Judiciary’s top management and the ULS Radical New Bar Governing Council, leading to significant improvements. These include appointing an additional resident judge, resuming timely civil hearings, organizing plea bargaining sessions at Masaka Main Prison, holding criminal sessions in Sembabule, Kyotera, and Kalangala, and a commitment to operationalize Rakai High Court in the next financial year.

The ULS Council congratulated Advocates Ssali Babu and Lule Alexander, expressing confidence in their ability to uphold the Society’s values and advance its mission. Both appointments are seen as steps toward strengthening the governance of the Uganda Law Society and ensuring that the legal profession in Uganda continues to operate with transparency and accountability.

With their wealth of experience and commitment to justice, Advocates Babu and Lule are expected to bring new energy and practical solutions to challenges facing lawyers and the wider community. Their leadership signals a focus on mentorship, professionalism, and community engagement within the ULS.

The Radical New Bar, under whose leadership these appointments were made, has emphasized the importance of integrity, service, and reform within the legal profession. Advocates Babu and Lule are tasked with continuing this mission, ensuring that lawyers across Uganda are supported and that public confidence in the legal system remains strong.

These changes come at a crucial time for the ULS as it navigates evolving challenges in the legal sector. Observers say the appointments reflect a commitment to proactive leadership, accountability, and better representation for all members of the Society.

As Advocates Ssali Babu and Lule Alexander step into their new roles, the legal community and the public alike will be watching their progress. Their success could set a benchmark for effective leadership and inspire future generations of Ugandan lawyers.
