In a devastating accident this morning, December 10, 2025, ten people lost their lives, and three others were injured in a horrific road crash at Busowa Town Council along the Busia Highway in Bugiri District. The crash, which occurred at around 7:00 am, involved a Toyota Hiace minibus (registration number UBN 817H) and a stationary trailer (UA 647BA/UA 430AA). The impact of the collision resulted in one of the deadliest accidents in the region this year.
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the Toyota Hiace was attempting to overtake another vehicle when tragedy struck. As the driver tried to maneuver past, an oncoming vehicle appeared in the opposite direction. In a desperate attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the driver swerved to the left, but lost control of the vehicle. The Hiace veered off the road and crashed into a stationary trailer on the side, causing the deadly impact.
Sadly, ten passengers, including the driver, were killed instantly. Their lives were tragically cut short in what seemed to be a desperate, but ultimately futile, effort to avoid a crash. The victims, all of whom were inside the Toyota Hiace, had no chance of survival when the vehicle collided with the heavy trailer. Three other occupants of the vehicle were rushed to the hospital with varying degrees of injury.
Upon receiving the distress call, emergency response teams rushed to the scene, swiftly transporting the survivors to nearby hospitals for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also recovered and transferred to the hospital mortuary, where further investigations will be carried out. The authorities have already begun their investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, though early indications point to reckless overtaking and lack of proper road safety measures.
This tragic accident highlights an ongoing issue that has led to numerous road deaths in Uganda – the dangers of reckless driving. Speeding, unsafe overtaking, and failure to adhere to basic traffic rules continue to be major contributors to the high number of road fatalities in the country. The crash serves as a painful reminder of the consequences of poor driving habits, not just for the drivers but for innocent lives as well.
In his official statement, SP Kananura Michael, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety, urged all road users to exercise caution, avoid dangerous overtaking, and follow speed limits at all times. “We must all take responsibility for our actions on the road and prioritize safety above all else. Reckless driving has caused too much harm to our families and communities,” Kananura emphasized.
The families of the victims are left grappling with the aftermath of this terrible event, as the community of Busowa and surrounding areas struggle to come to terms with the tragedy. In many ways, this crash serves as a call to action for both authorities and the public to put an end to dangerous driving practices that continue to claim lives on Uganda’s roads.
In light of this incident, authorities are urging all motorists to be more vigilant and adhere to traffic laws. It’s not just the responsibility of the drivers, but also of passengers and pedestrians, to help make the roads safer. The deadly accident at Busowa Town Council has shaken the local community, and it serves as an urgent reminder for everyone to value life and make safety their number one priority while on the road.
