Road Safety Starts with You!! Traffic Directorate Empowers Communities Across Uganda

Must read

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has stepped up its efforts to make Uganda’s roads safer through a strong community campaign under the theme “Community Involvement in Road Safety.” A series of workshops were recently held in Kira, Busoga East, and Bukedi Region, bringing together key road users and community leaders to discuss how everyone can play a role in preventing road crashes.

The workshops were led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Kananura Michael, the Directorate’s Community Liaison Officer, in partnership with regional traffic officers. They attracted a wide range of participants including taxi drivers, boda boda riders, religious leaders, local council members, teachers, students, and other community stakeholders. The sessions encouraged open discussions on road safety challenges and practical ways to improve discipline on the road.

During the workshops, SP Kananura reminded drivers and riders about the dangers of overspeeding and reckless driving, especially on highways. He urged all motorists to respect speed limits, avoid risky behavior, and seek proper driving training before using public roads. According to him, most crashes can be prevented if every road user acts responsibly and follows traffic rules.

To help participants spread the road safety message in their communities, the Directorate distributed educational materials such as banners, stickers, charts, and translated versions of the Highway Code. These tools are designed to make road safety education more accessible to all, including those who prefer information in local languages.

This campaign is part of the Directorate’s nationwide effort to reduce road crashes and promote safer behavior among all road users. By working closely with communities, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety hopes to create a culture of responsibility, awareness, and respect on the roads—because saving lives begins with every individual’s choice to drive safely.
