Scandal in Mukono!! Doctor Charged with Defrauding Job Seeker of 38 Million Shillings

Must read

A shocking corruption case has emerged in Mukono District as Dr. Wataba Saadi, a Municipal Medical Officer in Lugazi Municipality, was arraigned in court for allegedly selling government jobs. The charges were brought forward by Uganda’s Anti-Corruption Division, the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Dr. Wataba, together with Sekikubo Mubarak, Chairperson of LC III in Nakisunga Sub-County, and Mugerwa Ronald Saaku, the Probation and Welfare Officer of Lugazi Municipality, allegedly conspired to defraud a job applicant, Dr. Mukisa George William, of UGX 38,000,000.

The group claimed that the money was meant to influence members of the Mukono District Service Commission, promising that it would secure Dr. Mukisa a position as a Medical Officer in Mukono District. However, this claim was false, and the promised job did not exist.

The case was brought before the Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday afternoon. The accused face charges of Obtaining Money by False Pretence and Conspiracy to Defraud, both serious offenses under Uganda’s law.

Authorities say that between January and June 2025, the trio allegedly orchestrated the scam, targeting individuals seeking employment in government service. The scheme reportedly exploited the public’s trust in local officials.

If convicted, the accused could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and heavy fines. Anti-corruption experts warn that such scams undermine public confidence in government institutions and discourage honest job applicants.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in public sector recruitment, where unscrupulous officials allegedly use their positions to demand bribes or favors in exchange for employment opportunities.

Uganda’s Anti-Corruption Division stressed that no one is above the law and vowed to pursue all cases of fraud and corruption, especially those targeting vulnerable job seekers.

Dr. Wataba and his co-accused are expected to appear in court for further hearings as investigations continue. Authorities are urging the public to report any attempts to buy or sell government positions to ensure accountability.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of transparency in government recruitment and the need for strict enforcement of laws to protect citizens from fraud and exploitation.
