As thousands of pilgrims prepare to flock to Namugongo Shrines for the annual Martyrs’ Day celebrations on June 3, 2025, security and health agencies are leaving nothing to chance. On Friday Afternoon, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Mwesigwa Frank, the Director of Operations, carried out an inspection at the shrines to check on the readiness of the security arrangements in place.

During the visit, AIGP Mwesigwa commended the officers on the ground for their commitment and dedication to keeping pilgrims safe. He revealed that over 10,000 security personnel, both in uniform and plain clothes, have been deployed at Namugongo and surrounding areas. These operatives will work day and night to ensure that the celebrations are peaceful and that everyone attending is protected.
The security plan also includes standby teams and mobile squads that will be quick to respond in case of any emergencies. Medical teams have also been deployed and are fully prepared to provide immediate care to any pilgrims who may need help.

Before the inspection, AIGP Mwesigwa and the Minister of Health, Dr. Ruth Aceng, held an important inter-agency meeting. The meeting brought together different security and health bodies to finalize plans for the event. They discussed how to work closely together to provide both safety and medical care during the celebrations.
This year’s preparations show a strong commitment from the Ugandan government to ensure that pilgrims can worship and honor the Uganda Martyrs in a secure and supportive environment. As the country gets ready for one of its most significant religious events, all signs point to a well-coordinated and peaceful celebration.
