The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety under the Uganda Police has concluded a major road safety awareness and sensitization campaign in the Busoga East and Bukedi North regions. The campaign was led by SP Micheal Kananura, the Liaison Officer at the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, who visited several schools to engage directly with learners.
The main purpose of this initiative was to equip pupils with basic knowledge about road safety and to encourage responsible behavior on the roads. By teaching young people about the importance of following traffic rules, crossing roads safely, and wearing protective gear, the campaign aimed to build a generation that values safety and discipline while using the road.
During the campaign, SP Kananura emphasized that many accidents can be prevented if people adopt safer road practices. He also highlighted the crucial role of children as future road users who can influence their families and communities to act responsibly.
In a show of support, Shell Uganda donated crash helmets which SP Kananura distributed to some pupils. Educational materials about road safety were also shared with learners to help them remember and practice what they learned. These efforts are part of a broader move to reduce road crashes and promote a culture of safety across Uganda.
The campaign ended on a hopeful note, with both teachers and students appreciating the police’s effort to reach schools and spread this life-saving message. Through such programs, the Uganda Police continues to strengthen its partnership with communities and nurture a safer road environment for all.
