Sweet Deal for Farmers!! New Sugar Law Promises Better Pay for Cane Growers

Must read

In a major boost for sugarcane farmers across Uganda, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has signed the Sugar (Amendment) Bill, 2025, into law. This important event brought together sugarcane outgrowers and millers from Busoga, Bunyoro, Buganda, and Acholi subregions to discuss the future of the sugar industry. The new law is being hailed as a game changer, especially for farmers who have long felt left out of the profits made in the sugar business.

Under the new law, sugarcane growers will now receive 50% of the revenue generated by millers, a fair share that will increase to 55% in just two years. This means that farmers will benefit more directly from the sugar they work so hard to produce. It is a clear step toward fairness and economic empowerment for thousands of families who depend on sugarcane farming for their livelihood.

Another big win for farmers is the removal of the 5% “trash charge” that used to be deducted for every tonne of sugarcane delivered. This charge had been a point of frustration for many growers, and its removal shows that their voices have been heard. It also means more money in the pockets of the farmers.

This new law did not come overnight. It is the result of months of difficult negotiations between sugarcane millers and outgrowers. Both sides had to make sacrifices, but in the end, they reached a compromise that will help the entire sector grow stronger. The spirit of cooperation shown by the stakeholders is a positive sign for the future of agriculture in Uganda.

The signing of the Sugar (Amendment) Bill, 2025, marks a new chapter for the sugar industry. With better pay, fairer practices, and a shared commitment to growth, sugarcane farmers now have more reasons to hope for a sweeter tomorrow.
