Terror in God’s House!! ADF Rebels Attack Church, Leave Dozens Dead and a Nation in Grief

Must read

In a tragic and terrifying event, at least 40 Christians were brutally murdered while attending a peaceful Sunday prayer vigil at a Catholic church in Komanda, a town in the Ituri Province of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The shocking attack happened overnight between July 26 and 27, turning a sacred space into a scene of unimaginable horror.

The attackers are believed to be members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group linked to ISIS. According to the Congolese army (FARDC), the rebels stormed the church during the night and used machetes and crude weapons to slaughter innocent worshippers who had gathered to pray. Many others were left with serious injuries.

Lieutenant Jules Tshikudi Ngongo, a spokesperson for the Ituri Operational Sector, described the incident as a “massacre of great magnitude.” He explained that the victims were caught completely off guard during their night prayers and had no chance to escape or defend themselves. “This unspeakable tragedy occurred during a full-night vigil in a local church,” he said. “Over forty civilians were surprised and slaughtered with machetes.”

Military officials suspect the attack was carried out as retaliation for ongoing joint operations by the Congolese army (FARDC) and the Ugandan army (UPDF), which have been targeting ADF hideouts in Irumu and Mambasa. In a desperate act of revenge, the rebels seem to be targeting soft and vulnerable civilian gatherings, including places of worship.

Following the massacre, the Congolese army vowed to hunt down the attackers and intensify efforts to secure the region. “We will relentlessly pursue the terrorists to their last hiding place,” a military statement read, promising justice for the victims and safety for those still living in fear.

This horrific incident is one of the deadliest attacks on Christians in eastern Congo this year and adds to the already growing number of atrocities in the region. Over 7.8 million people have been displaced due to violence from more than 120 armed groups operating in Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

Church leaders, human rights activists, and humanitarian groups have strongly condemned the killings. They are calling on the international community to step in and help protect innocent civilians, especially those who gather in places of worship seeking peace and refuge.

The families of the victims are now left in mourning, and fear has once again gripped the region. Authorities are urging locals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent future attacks. As communities come to terms with this heartbreaking tragedy, the world watches and wonders: when will the violence end?
