Must read

A popular TikToker, Jinjo Nassif, has been arrested for spreading false information about the death of Hon. Yusuf Nsibambi, the Member of Parliament for Mawokota South. The incident has sparked serious concern over misinformation on social media.

According to reports, Nassif allegedly received Shs 100,000 from Nsibambi’s political opponents to post the fake news about the MP’s death on his social media account. The money was intended to tarnish Nsibambi’s reputation during a sensitive political period.

Hon. Nsibambi promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to Nassif’s arrest under the Computer Misuse Act. The law targets online crimes, including the spreading of false information meant to defame or mislead the public.

During interrogation, Nassif confessed to the crime. He admitted that he had been paid by political rivals of Nsibambi to share the false news, confirming the deliberate intent to discredit the MP.

Nassif is currently detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala while investigations continue. Police officials have promised to take strict action against anyone involved in spreading false information online.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police, through their spokesperson P. Onyango, urged the public to use social media responsibly. They warned that sharing misinformation not only damages reputations but could also have legal consequences.

Police emphasized that accepting money to tarnish someone’s image online is a criminal offense. They reminded social media users that online platforms should not be misused to manipulate public opinion or target political figures.

This incident highlights growing concerns about the misuse of social media during political campaigns. False reports and rumors can spread quickly, causing confusion, fear, and unnecessary tension in communities.

Observers say the arrest sends a strong message to others who might consider spreading fake news for personal or political gain. Authorities are determined to enforce laws that protect individuals from online defamation.

As investigations continue, the public is urged to verify information before sharing it online and to avoid being manipulated by political propaganda. The case of Jinjo Nassif serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of spreading lies in the digital age.
