Top Story!! Joint Security Forces Arrest Nearly 100 in Kampala’s Drug and Crime Sweep

Must read

The Kampala Metropolitan Police have carried out a major crackdown on crime and drug abuse in different parts of the city, arresting nearly 100 suspects in just two days. These operations took place on the 11th and 12th of June 2025 in Kira Division (Wakiso District), Central Kampala, and Mukono District. The goal was to target areas known for drug use, robberies, and other criminal activities. The operations were led by the Uganda Police Force with support from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and Crime Intelligence Units. Local leaders and community members were also involved.

In Kira Division, security teams moved into the areas of Najjera, Bulindo, and Shimon on 11th June. They raided known ghettos and criminal hideouts where drugs like opium and marijuana were being used. A total of 30 suspects were arrested in this sweep. These suspects are believed to be involved in petty crimes such as house break-ins and robberies. Police found several drug exhibits during the operation. All those arrested are currently held at Kira Police Station, where they are being screened and prepared for possible court charges.

On the same day, a major night operation in Central Kampala took place. This focused on busy downtown areas such as William Street, Wilson Road, Top Pub, Nakasero, the Old Taxi Park, Cooper Complex, and Shoprite. Officers arrested 60 male adults who were found loitering in black spots. Some were reportedly using drugs, while others were involved in snatching phones and bags from innocent passersby. These suspects are being held at the Central Police Station in Kampala as the legal process continues.

The following day, on 12th June, another joint security operation was launched in Kiwala Village, Nama Sub-County in Mukono District. This early-morning operation targeted criminal hideouts in the area and led to the arrest of 9 suspects. The suspects were found with opium and are suspected to be behind several robberies reported in the district. They are currently detained at Mukono Police Station and will soon appear in court.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police say these operations are part of ongoing efforts to clean up urban areas and reduce crime. They have promised to continue working with local communities and using intelligence-led approaches to identify and deal with criminal gangs. The Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, urged the public to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior to the nearest police station. He stressed that such cooperation is key to making the city safer for everyone.

These recent crackdowns show that the police are serious about restoring peace and security in Kampala and surrounding areas. With the help of the public and continued support from all security agencies, the fight against crime is gaining momentum.
