TOP STORY!! UPDF Officers Urged to Uphold Discipline and Honour Uganda’s Heroes

Must read

Officers of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have been reminded to stay disciplined, embrace the force’s ideological roots, and honour the spirit of Uganda’s national heroes. This important message was shared with the troops of the UPDF’s 3 Infantry Division during the launch of a leadership and ideological training course for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs). The course aims to build strong, principled leaders within the force.

Colonel Allan Kyangungu, the Deputy Division Commander, delivered the message on behalf of the Division Commander. While addressing the troops, Col Kyangungu encouraged the soldiers to live by the values that define the UPDF—discipline, teamwork, and obedience. “I urge you to uphold the discipline that defines the UPDF, promote ideological values, and reflect on the spirit of heroism,” he said.

This leadership training started at a special time, just as Uganda marks its 36th Heroes Day. Col Kyangungu used the moment to remind soldiers of the brave men and women who fought for the country’s freedom, led by President and Commander-in-Chief H.E. Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. He noted that the UPDF’s roots are deeply connected to this history of struggle, and that today’s soldiers have a duty to protect and promote those same values.

Col Kyangungu also stressed that the training is not just about leadership skills, but also about building ideological strength—the kind of thinking that helps soldiers stay true to their mission and country. He called on them to be resilient and united, saying that these are the foundations of a great and loyal army.

Speaking during the same event, Lieutenant Colonel Lenin Peter Kyongo explained that the training is especially important for NCOs. He described them as the backbone of the UPDF, playing key roles in day-to-day leadership and operations. According to Lt Col Kyongo, the course is designed to improve how NCOs think, lead, and carry out missions with purpose and clarity. It will also help increase the force’s efficiency and readiness to respond to national security challenges.

Several senior officers attended the launch, including Col Richard Butungi, the Division Administrative Officer, and Lt Col Moses Deke, Commander of the 203 Anti-Aircraft Brigade. Their presence showed the importance of the training programme and the commitment of UPDF leadership to shaping strong and disciplined officers.

As the UPDF continues its mission to protect Uganda, this training course is a powerful step toward building a force that honours its past, remains ideologically strong, and is prepared for the future.
