Police in Kampala are investigating a heartbreaking incident in which a five-year-old girl lost her life after being electrocuted in Kibuli. The tragic event happened in Kakunguru Zone, Makindye Division, and has left residents in deep shock and sorrow.
The young girl, identified as Ayomirwoth Rehema, is said to have been playing with other children near a drainage channel on the morning of Wednesday, 28th January 2026. According to reports, the children were enjoying their time outdoors when Rehema unknowingly came into contact with a live stay wire that was supporting an electric pole nearby.
The wire, which is believed to have been carrying live electricity, caused a fatal electric shock. People in the area quickly realized something was wrong, but it was already too late to save the little girl’s life. The sudden loss of such a young child has deeply affected the community, with many residents expressing grief and concern over public safety.
Police officers from Kabalagala Police Division, together with Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCOs), responded quickly after the incident was reported. The scene was carefully examined and documented as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities want to understand how the dangerous wire was left exposed in an area where children often play.
The body of the deceased child was later taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, officials from the electricity distribution company were contacted and immediately disconnected the affected wire to prevent any further danger to the public.
Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made so far. Investigations are still ongoing to determine responsibility and whether there was any negligence involved in maintaining the electrical installation.
This sad incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of electrical infrastructure in residential areas. Community members are now calling for regular inspection of electric poles and wires, especially in places where children play or people frequently pass.
Police have urged the public to be alert and to report any exposed, hanging, or faulty electrical wires to the relevant authorities without delay. They emphasize that quick reporting can save lives and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As the family mourns the loss of their young daughter, the community is reminded of the importance of safety and vigilance. What should be ordinary playtime for children should never turn into a moment of disaster.
