A high-stakes legal battle is underway at the Supreme Court of Uganda, where Hon. Francis Zaake is contesting an appeal filed by the Attorney General on behalf of Speaker of Parliament Anita Among. The appeal aims to overturn a prior court decision that favored Zaake.
Human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza took to social media to confirm that Zaake’s legal team is fully assembled and ready. The team features some of Uganda’s most prominent legal figures, including Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, George Musisi, Isaac Ssemakadde, Male Mabirizi, Kato Tumusiime, and Julius Assekajjako.
“We are here to uphold the Constitution and safeguard the non-derogable right to a fair hearing and natural justice,” Kiiza stated, highlighting the team’s commitment to defending Zaake’s constitutional rights.
The case has garnered significant national attention due to its political sensitivity and broader constitutional ramifications.
Zaake was previously censured by Parliament following a heated dispute with Speaker Among. His legal representatives argue that the censure process violated his right to a fair hearing, while the Attorney General maintains that all parliamentary procedures were properly followed.
Legal experts note that the outcome of this case could set a critical precedent regarding how Parliament disciplines its members, potentially reshaping the intersection between internal parliamentary procedures and constitutional protections.
With heavyweight legal minds on both sides, the case promises to be a protracted and intense legal contest.
As the proceedings commence, the Supreme Court finds itself at the heart of a pivotal legal moment—one that could significantly influence Uganda’s democratic institutions and the balance of power within its legislative framework.
