A serious scandal has rocked the Namirembe Road Police Post following the mysterious release of a suspect who was caught in illegal possession of suspected gold. The suspect, a Congolese national identified as Kakule Nukirainina, was arrested in the early hours of May 30, 2025, around 2:00 a.m. by officers on duty at Namirembe Road Police Post. During a search, the officers found him with three pieces suspected to be gold.
A case of illegal possession of minerals was immediately opened, and the Division Police Commander (DPC) of Old Kampala Police Division was informed. In response, the DPC alerted the Mineral Police at Naguru to collect both the suspect and the evidence.
However, by the time the Mineral Police officers arrived, a shocking development had occurred — the Officer in Charge (OC) of Namirembe Road Police Post, ASP Baguma Yahaya, had already released the suspect along with the gold. This unexpected release raised serious questions and prompted the Mineral Police officers to report the matter directly to the DPC.
Reacting to the complaint, the DPC instructed ASP Kamusiime Nicholas, the Officer in Charge of Old Kampala Police Station, to take immediate action against ASP Baguma Yahaya. As a result, a case of aiding a suspect to escape was recorded under SD 55/30/5/2025 at Old Kampala Police Station.
Further investigation revealed more irregularities. The suspect was not made to record a statement, and surprisingly, even the officers who had arrested him did not provide any statements regarding the incident. These gaps in procedure have raised strong concerns about possible internal misconduct.
Efforts to get ASP Baguma Yahaya to make a statement at the Division have so far failed, as he has not yet reported to the Division as required. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full truth behind this troubling incident.
This case has sparked serious debate and concern over accountability and integrity within the police force. The public and authorities alike now await the outcome of the inquiry, as questions remain about how and why a suspect with suspected gold could be quietly released from custody.
