The Executive Director and Chief Statistician of Uganda, Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, was among the key government dignitaries who welcomed His Excellency the President as he commenced his campaign rallies in the Kigezi Sub-region this afternoon.
While addressing the media, Dr. Mukiza presented key demographic and socio-economic indicators for Kisoro District, drawn from the National Population and Housing Census 2024 Final Report. He noted that the district has a population of 433,662 persons. Of these, 85,092 persons aged 10 years and above own mobile phones, and 8,840 persons aged 10 years and above use the Internet, highlighting the district’s growing digital access.

On household characteristics, he reported that 73,427 households own at least one mosquito net, a positive sign for malaria prevention efforts. Additionally, 62,142 households have access to improved water sources, while 27,513 households have access to improved sanitation facilities, demonstrating steady progress in public health and hygiene.
Energy access has also improved, with 27,264 households using grid electricity for lighting, and 18,357 households using solar energy, reflecting increasing adoption of alternative energy solutions.

Dr. Mukiza emphasized that although the statistics show commendable progress across several sectors, there is an urgent need to invest in and upgrade the road network within the district. Improved transport infrastructure, he noted, is essential to unlocking Kisoro’s vast tourism potential. The district is endowed with exceptional natural attractions such as the mountain gorillas, crater lakes, and other unique features, which, if fully harnessed, can significantly boost tourism and contribute to local and national economic growth.
