The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), the institution mandated to conduct the National Census every ten years, has contributed Shs 30 million to Rotary Clubs in preparation for the annual Cancer Run, scheduled for Sunday, 31st August, at Kololo Grounds.

While handing over the funds to Rotary President Mr. Alex Mugume at UBOS headquarters in Kampala, UBOS Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza said, “UBOS has joined the fight against cancer in Uganda.” He explained that the contribution was made under UBOS’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

Dr. Mukiza further revealed that UBOS had provided a total of 10,000 kits—850 to the Rotary Club of Muyenga and 150 to the Rotary Club of Ntinda. He also confirmed that UBOS will actively participate in the 20km, 10km, and 5km races. “I call upon all UBOS staff to take part in the Cancer Run this Sunday at Kololo Grounds and to begin practicing so they are fit,” he emphasized.

In his remarks, Rotary President Alex Mugume thanked UBOS for the financial support in the fight against cancer. “Cancer is a serious problem in Uganda, with almost every family affected,” he said. He also noted that other institutions supporting the Cancer Run include Quality Chemicals, Uganda Clays, National Drug Authority, Bank of Uganda, Quarterways, among others. Mugume urged all Ugandans to join Rotary in the fight against cancer.

Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, who also serves as Deputy Governor and District Chairman for Rotary in Uganda and Tanzania, highlighted the growing cancer burden in the country. He stated that Rotary has already established a blood bank at Mengo Hospital and is currently constructing a cancer ward at Nsambya Hospital. “We organize the Cancer Run every year to raise support for this cause. I urge Ugandans to go for regular cancer check-ups because the disease can be treated if detected early,” he advised, encouraging widespread participation in this year’s run.
