Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has received the Rotary Award from the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda in recognition of his distinguished leadership and commitment to national service through the production of quality statistics and professional excellence.
The Chief Guest, Hon. Mike Sebalu, who also serves as District Governor for D9213 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, commended Dr. Mukiza for exemplifying high standards of vocational service in line with Rotary’s values of integrity, service above self, and community impact.
He emphasized the importance of statistics in national development, noting that accurate and timely data is critical for policy formulation, planning, budgeting, monitoring, and effective service delivery.
“Statistics are not just numbers; they are the backbone of decision-making,” Hon. Sebalu said, adding that institutions like UBOS are essential in guiding the country toward measurable progress.
He further acknowledged Dr. Mukiza’s leadership in strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring that national planning is supported by credible and reliable data.
Hon. Sebalu also outlined the award selection process, explaining that nominees are proposed by members, assessed by a board, and finally approved by the general assembly.
He noted that Dr. Mukiza’s consistent delivery of high-quality statistics across all levels of administration made him a worthy recipient of the award. He also mentioned that Dr. Mukiza is a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a Major Donor.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mukiza expressed gratitude to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for the recognition, describing it as an encouragement to continue strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring UBOS provides reliable and relevant data.
“I am truly grateful to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for recognizing my service with the Rotary Award,” he said. “This honour reflects both my individual efforts and the collective dedication of the institution to excellence.”
He noted that Rotarians use statistical data to complement government efforts in communities, citing initiatives such as the blood bank at Mengo Hospital and the cancer unit at Nsambya Hospital aimed at improving citizens’ well-being.
He added that UBOS has continued to strengthen the country’s statistical ecosystem to ensure the regular availability of data for planning and development.
Dr. Mukiza encouraged UBOS staff to join Rotary clubs to extend their service beyond their professional roles and build broader networks, highlighting the shared values between Rotary and statistical service.
The President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, Ann Kamugisa, commended Dr. Mukiza’s leadership, noting that it has enhanced institutional credibility and contributed significantly to Uganda’s development agenda.
She said that under his leadership, UBOS has become a cornerstone of national planning, supporting government, private sector players, and development partners.
She added that the Rotary Award reflects the club’s appreciation of Dr. Mukiza’s outstanding contribution and the positive impact he has made in the lives of many Ugandans.
