UCC Cracks Down on Illegal Communication Imports! Authorisation Now Mandatory

Must read

In a decisive move to regulate the importation of communication equipment, Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), has issued a new directive that is set to tighten control over all communication devices entering the country. According to the letter, no communication equipment may be imported into Uganda without prior authorisation from the Commission, a measure that aligns with the existing law.

The directive is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to curb the entry of illegal or non-compliant communication devices, which can pose risks to national security, consumer safety, and the integrity of Uganda’s telecommunications networks. The UCC emphasizes that this regulation applies to all individuals and businesses involved in the importation of phones, radios, internet devices, and other communication technologies.

Importers are now required to obtain formal clearance from the UCC before bringing any communication equipment into Uganda. Failure to comply with this regulation could lead to severe penalties, including confiscation of the devices, fines, and potential legal action. The Commission has urged all stakeholders to strictly adhere to the rules to avoid disruptions to their business operations and to contribute to a secure and well-regulated communications sector.

The announcement has already sparked discussions among traders, telecom companies, and consumers, with many acknowledging the need for tighter controls to ensure safety and quality. At the same time, some have raised concerns about potential delays and increased costs for importing essential equipment. The UCC, however, reassures the public that the measures are designed to protect both consumers and the country’s communication infrastructure.

With this directive, Uganda joins several countries that have strengthened their regulatory oversight on communication imports, highlighting the growing importance of cybersecurity and device compliance in today’s digital world.
