UCC Leads the Charge in Responsible E-Waste Management in Uganda

Must read

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) plays a vital role in managing the entire lifecycle of ICT devices in Uganda, from the moment they are approved for use, through their active life, and finally to their disposal. According to Uganda’s E-Waste Policy, UCC ensures that this process is safe, traceable, and transparent. This means that the collection of electronic waste is organized, the protection of data is guaranteed, and the reporting of sector activities is reliable and accurate.

UCC’s responsibilities go far beyond simply licensing and regulating ICT devices. The Commission focuses on ensuring that the growth of information and communication technology aligns with national priorities such as environmental protection, public health, and responsible use of technology. By actively monitoring the collection and disposal of e-waste, UCC helps prevent harmful materials from polluting the environment and safeguards communities from potential health risks associated with improper disposal.

Director Susan Wegoye, representing UCC at the “Road Map to ICT E-Waste Collection in Uganda,” emphasized that the Commission’s work is about more than regulation; it is about building a sustainable, responsible, and transparent ICT ecosystem. UCC’s approach highlights the importance of balancing technological growth with environmental and societal well-being, ensuring that Uganda can enjoy the benefits of ICT while minimizing its negative impacts.
