Uganda and DRC Deepen Military Cooperation in Fight Against Rebels

Must read

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), arrived in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), on a key official visit. His arrival marked the beginning of important talks with his counterpart, Lieutenant General Jules Banza Mwilambwe, who is the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC).

The two top military leaders met to discuss ways to improve military cooperation between Uganda and the DRC. One of the main topics was Operation Shujaa, a joint military operation by the UPDF and FARDC that has been going on in Eastern Congo. This operation has played a big role in fighting the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a rebel group that has caused instability in the region. The generals agreed that the operation has made strong progress and helped restore peace in areas that were once troubled.

To build on these successes, the meeting ended with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to strengthen the relationship between the two countries’ armies and push for more teamwork in dealing with threats in the region.

General Kainerugaba was joined by a team of high-ranking UPDF officers, including Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, the Commander of Land Forces. The FARDC was also well represented by its Deputy Chief of General Staff and other senior officials.

This visit is seen as an important step toward better defense cooperation and lasting peace in the region. With both armies working more closely than ever before, there is new hope for security and stability in Eastern DRC.
