Yesterday, the Chairperson of the Uganda Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, held a meeting with the Political Commissars of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) at the Oliver Tambo School of Leadership in Kaweweta. The session was aimed at enhancing understanding of the electoral process and the important role that political leaders play in supporting free and fair elections.
During the discussion, Justice Byabakama highlighted the rights, duties, and responsibilities of the commissars during elections. He emphasized the importance of upholding the law, ensuring impartiality, and promoting democratic values within their units. The meeting also focused on how political commissars can help educate their colleagues and the wider public about the voting process.
The interactive session allowed the commissars to ask questions and seek clarity on specific aspects of the electoral process. Justice Byabakama encouraged them to be proactive in promoting transparency and accountability, stressing that their influence can help strengthen public confidence in elections.
By engaging with UPDF leaders directly, the Electoral Commission aims to create a better-informed military leadership that can guide and support citizens in understanding their electoral rights. This initiative reflects the Commission’s broader goal of fostering collaboration among all stakeholders to safeguard democracy in Uganda.
The event at Kaweweta marks an important step in bridging the gap between military leadership and civilian electoral structures. By equipping the UPDF Political Commissars with knowledge and guidance, the EC hopes to ensure that every election is conducted smoothly, fairly, and with the full participation of informed citizens.
