Uganda Gears Up for Special Interest Group Elections This Week

Must read

This week, the Electoral Commission of Uganda (@UgandaEC) will be holding important elections for Special Interest Groups (SIGs) at the sub-county level across the country. These elections give a chance for groups like the elderly, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and the youth to choose their leaders and have their voices heard in decision-making.

The voting starts today, with the elderly being the first group to cast their votes. On Wednesday, 16th July 2025, it’s the turn for persons with disabilities, and on Friday, 18th July 2025, the youth will go to the polls.

The Electoral Commission’s Head of Communications, Mr. Julius Muchunguzi, has reminded all eligible voters to follow the law during the election process. He called on all voters and candidates to remain peaceful and respectful, saying that the elections are for the benefit of every community.

“These elections are very important because they allow different groups to have leaders who understand their needs and can speak for them,” Muchunguzi said. He added that when people obey the rules and vote peacefully, the whole country wins.

This week’s SIG elections are a key part of Uganda’s democratic process, making sure that even the most often-overlooked groups have a say in how things are run in their communities. As the polls open, all eyes are on how the elections will be carried out—and whether voters will respond to the Electoral Commission’s call for peace and order.
