On the sidelines of the 28th Universal Postal Congress taking place in Dubai, Uganda once again showed its commitment to shaping the future of postal services both at home and globally. The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, together with the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Hon. Nyombi Thembo, met with top leadership of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

The meeting brought together UPU Director General Mr. Masahiko Metoki and Deputy Director General Mr. Marjan Osvald, who welcomed Uganda’s active role in international postal development. The discussions focused on the UPU 2026–2029 strategy, which aims to strengthen the postal sector by embracing innovation, digital transformation, and improved regional cooperation.

Hon. Dr. Baryomunsi emphasized that Uganda values its membership in the UPU and remains committed to working with global partners to improve postal services. He noted that postal systems are no longer limited to traditional mail but have become an important driver of e-commerce, financial inclusion, and connectivity, especially for people in rural communities.

The UCC Executive Director, Hon. Nyombi Thembo, also highlighted Uganda’s ongoing reforms in the communications and postal sectors. He explained that Uganda is positioning itself to take advantage of technology, ensure efficiency in postal delivery, and support economic growth.

The UPU leadership praised Uganda’s dedication to the shared vision of the Congress, especially in advancing regional priorities in Africa. They noted that cooperation among member states is key to ensuring that the postal network remains relevant and responsive in the digital age.

This high-level engagement signals Uganda’s readiness to play an active role in shaping the future of the global postal industry. With strong collaboration between government, regulators, and international partners, Uganda’s postal sector is set to grow in innovation and impact under the upcoming UPU strategy.
