Ugandan Airforce Rescues Thousands in War-Torn South Sudan

Must read

Kampala, Thursday, 29 May, 2025. The Uganda People’s Defence Airforce (UPDAF) launched a major humanitarian mission to help thousands of people suffering from hunger in South Sudan’s northern Upper Nile State.

Over the past several days, Ugandan military aircraft have dropped hundreds of tonnes of emergency food supplies to areas cut off by fighting. These life-saving airdrops are reaching displaced families in Ulang and Nasir Counties, where food is scarce and people are facing famine-like conditions.

The aid operation is part of an international effort to help South Sudan, a country currently struggling with renewed violence. Since March 2025, fierce fighting has broken out between government forces known as the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) and a rebel group called the SPLA-IO.

This group, also known as the White Army, is linked to South Sudan’s jailed First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar. They have been accused of carrying out brutal attacks, especially targeting members of the Dinka tribe and other ethnic groups.

In response to a request from South Sudanese leaders, Uganda has also sent soldiers from its ground forces (UPDF) to assist. Their role includes helping to protect the capital, Juba, and offering technical military support to local forces.

Thanks to Uganda’s presence, the security situation around Juba has improved greatly. As a result, foreign embassies, investors, and businesses are now returning to the capital, bringing hope for recovery and stability.

This humanitarian and military support highlights the strong relationship between Uganda and South Sudan. More importantly, it shows the crucial role regional cooperation can play in times of crisis. With continued support and stability, there is hope that peace will return to the war-affected regions and that suffering families will get the help they urgently need.
