The Electoral Commission on Monday morning held an important meeting with a high-level delegation from the Joint African Union (AU), COMESA, and IGAD Election Observation Mission ahead of the 2026 General Elections. The delegation was led by former Nigerian President, H.E. Goodluck Jonathan, who is heading the mission tasked with observing and assessing the country’s electoral process.
During the meeting, the Electoral Commission briefed the observers on the country’s electoral roadmap, clearly outlining the key stages leading to the 2026 polls. These included voter registration updates, nomination timelines, campaign periods, polling day arrangements, and post-election activities. The Commission emphasized that every step is being carefully planned to ensure the process runs smoothly.
The EC also shared details about ongoing preparations, including improvements in voter education, strengthening election management systems, and coordination with security agencies. Officials explained that these efforts are meant to reduce confusion, improve efficiency, and guarantee that every eligible voter can participate freely in the election.
The Commission reaffirmed its strong commitment to delivering a transparent, credible, and peaceful electoral process. It stressed that fairness and accountability remain at the heart of its work, and that it is guided by both regional and international best practices in election management.
H.E. Goodluck Jonathan and his team welcomed the briefing and appreciated the openness shown by the Electoral Commission. The mission noted that early engagement with election management bodies is crucial in promoting trust, confidence, and stability in the electoral process.
The presence of the Joint AU, COMESA, and IGAD Election Observation Mission signals strong regional interest in the 2026 General Elections. Their involvement is expected to enhance credibility, promote democratic values, and encourage peaceful participation among all stakeholders as the country prepares for the important national exercise.
