Uganda’s Electoral Commission Reschedules Regional Delegate Elections Ahead of 2025/2026 General Polls

Must read

As Uganda prepares for the 2025/2026 General Elections, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced important changes to its election roadmap. The Commission, chaired by Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, confirmed that some of the activities initially planned for late August 2025 have now been rescheduled to new dates in September and October 2025. This decision follows consultations with key stakeholders to ensure smooth participation across the regions.

According to the new schedule, the Regional Conferences to elect non-unionised workers’ delegates to the national level will now take place on Monday, 1st September 2025. These elections will be conducted in the four main areas of representation: Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western regions. The adjustment provides more time for preparations and wider mobilization of participants.

In addition, the Regional Conferences for electing delegates to the National Council for Older Persons have also been moved. Instead of taking place on Wednesday, 27th August 2025, they will now be held on Friday, 26th September 2025. This extension is expected to give older persons’ councils more space to coordinate and ensure greater inclusion of senior citizens in the democratic process.

For young people, the much-anticipated elections of the National Youth Committees will now be conducted between 1st and 3rd October 2025, instead of the earlier dates of 27th–29th August 2025. This adjustment highlights the importance of youth participation and representation in national leadership structures.

The Electoral Commission has appealed to all stakeholders, including community leaders, political organizations, and eligible voters, to take note of these new dates and actively participate in the process. The Commission further emphasized that all participants should follow the official guidelines that will be issued to ensure transparency and fairness.

As Uganda heads closer to the 2025/2026 General Elections, these changes underline the EC’s commitment to organizing free and fair elections while giving all groups—workers, older persons, and the youth—an opportunity to be represented at the national level. The adjustments also reflect the Commission’s readiness to listen to stakeholders and act in the best interest of inclusive participation in the country’s democratic journey.
