Uganda’s Refugee Crisis!! A Call for Global Support

Must read

On May 30, 2025, the Government of Uganda and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released a joint statement highlighting the serious impact of global funding shortages on refugee operations. A high-level meeting held on May 23, 2025, brought both parties together to address the crisis, which is affecting refugees not only in Uganda but around the world.

Due to limited funding, tough decisions have been made, including staff cuts and operational changes. These actions, while difficult, were carried out in close cooperation between the Government of Uganda and UNHCR to manage resources wisely. However, these cuts are a clear sign of how deeply the budget limitations are affecting refugee services. The partners expressed deep regret over how these changes impact both staff and the refugees who depend on this support.

Uganda is known for its open-door policy and strong commitment to refugees. This partnership between Uganda and UNHCR remains firm, built on a shared goal to help those fleeing conflict and hardship. The two partners continue to work hand in hand to ensure transparent, efficient delivery of aid, despite the tough environment.

Uganda is currently home to about 1.9 million refugees, one of the highest numbers in the world. This year alone, over 110,000 new refugees have arrived. However, funding to support these people is alarmingly low. UNHCR Uganda is only 17% funded for the year 2025. This shortfall puts essential services such as food, healthcare, and shelter at risk.

Both the Government of Uganda and UNHCR are now calling on the global community to urgently increase support. Uganda cannot manage this challenge alone. Sustained international help is crucial to maintaining Uganda’s strong refugee policy and protecting those who are most in need. Their message is clear: solidarity and action are needed now more than ever.
