The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) have held a high-level meeting to strengthen cooperation and security operations on Lake Edward. The discussions followed an incident that took place on October 1, 2025, prompting both sides to review coordination efforts in the area.

The bilateral meeting was held at Kasindi Port in Beni, Eastern DRC, and brought together top military commanders from both countries. The UPDF delegation was led by Maj Gen Stephen Mugerwa, the Mountain Division Commander, and Col James Kasule, the 2nd Infantry Division Deputy Commander. The FARDC team was headed by Brig Gen Mugisa Muleka Joseph, the Sector Commander for the Northern Front – Kivu.

During the talks, the two forces agreed to enhance joint security operations on Lake Edward through regular coordination between their marine units. Maj Gen Mugerwa emphasized the need for a structured approach, proposing the creation of a joint committee to handle coordination, resolve disputes, and strengthen cooperation. “Marine commanders should meet regularly to discuss and resolve issues,” he said.

Brig Gen Mugisa welcomed the proposal, saying the two forces share strong historical ties and face common security challenges. “FARDC and UPDF have a permanent bond and will continue to cooperate because we face common challenges,” he remarked. As a gesture of goodwill, Maj Gen Mugerwa handed over weapons and ammunition recovered after the incident, along with a boat engine that will be collected by the Congolese side.

Both delegations agreed on several measures to promote stability, including joint patrols, regular coordination meetings, and community sensitisation along the lake. The renewed collaboration reflects the ongoing commitment of Uganda and the DRC to maintaining peace, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring security along their shared borders.
