Veteran Politician and Educator Mary Karooro Okurut Passes Away at 69

Mary Karooro Okurut, a respected Ugandan politician, educator, and author, has passed away at the age of 69. Her death was confirmed on August 11, 2025, by close family friends, though the cause has not yet been made public. Karooro Okurut was known for her long and distinguished career in Uganda’s government and her deep commitment to education and women’s empowerment.

She served in several important roles under President Yoweri Museveni’s administration, including as Minister for Information and National Guidance and later as Minister in Charge of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister. She was also the first spokesperson for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and represented Bushenyi District as a Member of Parliament for many years.

Beyond politics, Karooro Okurut was a well-regarded author and advocate. She wrote several books and worked passionately to promote the education of girls and empower women in Uganda. Her leadership as Executive Director of the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans (UWESO) earned her respect across the country.

News of her passing has brought a wave of sadness across Uganda. Many Ugandans have expressed their condolences and shared memories of her dedication and service. One family friend described her as “a brilliant woman of substance” and “a mother figure” to the nation.
