The Directorate of Traffic and Road safety in Uganda police has resumed it’s drink drive operations commonly known as Kawunyemu in Kampala to reduce on road accidents, Spyreports has learnt.
According to traffic police Spokesperson SP Micheal Kanaura, traffic officers attached to CPS, Katwe and Jinja Road police stations carried out an operation on drunk drivers and over 36 Drivers Were Netted driving under the influence of alcohol.
“We detained and fingerprinted the drunk drivers and were all taken to court,” Says Kananura. He says alcohol consumption significantly impairs driving abilities, affecting attention, perception,motor skills decision making and contributes to traffic crashes resulting into injuries and fatalities.
“These operations will continue as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure safer roads for everyone,” he adds saying that motorists should refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
According to traffic and road safety annual Crime report, most fatal accidents occured on Sundays and followed by Saturday and Friday.
“We registered more fatal accidents on weekends because drivers are always under the influence of alcohol and drugs,” Says AIGP Lawrence Nuwabiine who also heads traffic.
