A devastating accident occurred on the evening of April 28, 2026, when a canoe carrying an estimated 35–40 passengers capsized on River Nguse in Kagadi District. The incident took place near Kyaleni Village, within Pachwa Town Council, at around 8:30 PM. Police have confirmed that there were numerous passengers on board, and tragically, several are still missing.
The police acted quickly, and Marine Police immediately launched a search and rescue operation to recover the missing individuals. One person, Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, a 27-year-old from Kyaleni, has been confirmed as a survivor. However, the exact number of missing people remains uncertain due to the lack of a passenger list, making it difficult to determine who was on the canoe.
The authorities suspect that the accident may have been caused by a combination of factors, including the canoe being overloaded, the dangers of night travel, and the condition of the vessel.
