A devastating accident occurred on the evening of April 28, 2026, when a canoe carrying an estimated 35–40 passengers capsized on River Nguse in Kagadi District. The incident took place near Kyaleni Village, within Pachwa Town Council, at around 8:30 PM. Police have confirmed that there were numerous passengers on board, and tragically, several are still missing.
The police acted quickly, and Marine Police immediately launched a search and rescue operation to recover the missing individuals. One person, Byaruhanga Tumuhaise, a 27-year-old from Kyaleni, has been confirmed as a survivor. However, the exact number of missing people remains uncertain due to the lack of a passenger list, making it difficult to determine who was on the canoe.
The authorities suspect that the accident may have been caused by a combination of factors, including the canoe being overloaded, the dangers of night travel, and the condition of the vessel. Investigators are working hard to determine the exact cause of the capsizing. Meanwhile, police have urged relatives of anyone who may have been on the canoe to visit the Kagadi Central Police Station to report any missing persons.
As the search for survivors continues, the community is left in shock and mourning. Authorities have promised to keep the public informed with further updates as the rescue operation progresses.
