Police in Nakaseke District have arrested 22 people suspected of unlawfully possessing wildlife species and wildlife products.
The suspects were arrested on Monday, August 17, 2026, at about 11:00pm after police officers operating a snap checkpoint intercepted a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K.
According to police, the vehicle was carrying the 22 occupants along with hunting equipment, suspected wildlife products and other items believed to be linked to illegal hunting activities.
During the search, officers recovered several items which were secured as exhibits. These included hunting nets, spears, pangas and knives, as well as roots and leaves of unidentified plant species.
Police also recovered smoked and fresh meat suspected to be wild meat. Other wildlife-related items found in the vehicle included three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills.
The 22 occupants were subsequently arrested and detained to assist with investigations into the suspected unlawful possession of wildlife species and products.
Police said the suspects will be transferred to the relevant authorities at the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for further management and necessary action.
The arrest comes as authorities continue efforts to combat illegal hunting and the unlawful possession and trade of wildlife and wildlife products in different parts of the country.
Police have urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report activities involving illegal hunting, possession or trade in protected wildlife species.
