From Tradition to Technology! UCC Launches Mission to Preserve Uganda’s Musical Legacy

Must read

Uganda is taking a bold step to protect one of its most treasured cultural traditions through the newly launched Atakulaaba Heritage Music Initiative. Introduced by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the initiative aims to preserve, digitise, and promote Kadongo Kamu music while creating new opportunities for the veteran artists who helped shape the genre.

The initiative was officially unveiled during an Executive Dinner hosted by UCC Executive Director Hon. Nyombi Thembo. The event marked the beginning of a national campaign focused on safeguarding Kadongo Kamu, a music style that has played a major role in Uganda’s cultural and social development for decades. Through storytelling, social commentary, education, and entertainment, Kadongo Kamu has captured the experiences, values, and aspirations of Ugandans across generations.

However, many classic recordings are now at risk of disappearing. Ageing archives, deteriorating analogue tapes, and limited exposure among younger audiences threaten the survival of this rich musical heritage. The Atakulaaba Initiative seeks to address these challenges by collecting, restoring, digitising, and preserving important Kadongo Kamu recordings. Once digitised, the music will be made available on modern platforms, ensuring that it remains accessible to both local and international audiences.

Speaking at the launch, Hon. Nyombi Thembo highlighted the importance of protecting Uganda’s cultural assets in the digital era. He noted that Uganda’s heritage is not only a source of pride but also an economic resource that can benefit artists and the nation as a whole. By embracing technology, the initiative aims to ensure that cultural treasures are preserved while creating opportunities for artists to earn from licensing, royalties, and wider distribution of their work.

Beyond preserving music, the initiative also focuses on supporting veteran Kadongo Kamu musicians. Many artists who made significant contributions to Uganda’s cultural development face social and economic challenges despite their achievements. Through partnerships with government institutions, the private sector, media organisations, cultural groups, and the creative industry, UCC hopes to improve the welfare and recognition of these legendary performers.

The launch event serves as a precursor to the Atakulaaba Heritage Music Showcase, which will take place on 31 July 2026 at Sheraton Gardens in Kampala. The showcase is expected to bring together legendary musicians, cultural leaders, broadcasters, content creators, researchers, students, and music lovers from across the country. It will provide a platform to celebrate Uganda’s musical heritage while raising awareness about the importance of preserving cultural content.

One of the initiative’s key goals is to reconnect younger generations with indigenous music traditions. In an era dominated by global digital content, many young people have limited exposure to traditional Ugandan music. Through education, digital access, and public engagement, Atakulaaba seeks to strengthen appreciation for local culture and encourage intergenerational learning.

The initiative also aims to establish a national repository of heritage content that can support research, education, broadcasting, and cultural tourism. Such a resource would not only preserve history but also serve as a valuable tool for future generations seeking to understand Uganda’s cultural journey.

As Uganda continues to embrace the digital age, the Atakulaaba Heritage Music Initiative stands as an important reminder that technology can be used to protect and promote cultural identity. By preserving the voices, stories, and songs of Kadongo Kamu, UCC is helping to ensure that a vital part of Uganda’s heritage continues to inspire, educate, and entertain generations to come. :
