Police Rescue 48 Dogs in Mityana, Arrest Three for Animal Cruelty

Must read

Police in Wamala Region have rescued 48 dogs and arrested three suspects following an intelligence-led operation against illegal dog keeping houses in Mityana Municipality. The operation, carried out on 12 June 2026, targeted areas of Kansuleti, Kasimbi, and Bamunanika in Busimbi Division after reports raised concern about the way animals were being handled.

According to police, the illegal dog care shelters had become a source of fear in the community. Residents had complained about poor handling of the dogs and the unsafe conditions in which they were kept. Acting on these concerns, police moved in to inspect the suspected locations and discovered disturbing scenes.

During the operation, officers found several dogs in poor condition. Some had visible injuries such as broken limbs and cut tails, while many others were severely malnourished. Authorities also noted that the animals had no vaccination records, a situation that raised fears of possible health risks if any of them escaped into the community.

Forty-eight dogs were rescued from the different locations and immediately handed over to Animal Lifeline Uganda, a registered non-governmental organization. The organization has a holding facility in Kateete Cell, Kireku Ward, Busimbi Division, where the animals are now being cared for. The directors of the NGO assured authorities that they will work closely with the district veterinary officer to vaccinate the dogs, improve their health, and control their breeding. They also plan to open the process for members of the public who may wish to adopt some of the rescued animals.

Police confirmed that three suspects were arrested in connection with the cruel treatment of the dogs. They are expected to be taken to court and charged with cruelty to animals, along with any other charges that may be recommended by the Resident State Attorney.

Authorities have also issued a warning to members of the public interested in keeping or caring for stray animals. They advised that anyone wishing to run such activities must follow proper legal procedures and obtain the necessary approvals to avoid breaking the law.

Police say investigations are still ongoing as they work to fully understand the scale of the illegal operations and ensure that animal welfare standards are respected in the district.
