Political tensions escalated on Tuesday night after veteran lawyer and opposition politician Erias Lukwago was reportedly dumped at Kira Division Police Station following his arrest in a case that has attracted widespread public attention across Uganda.
According to information available, Lukwago spent the night in custody at Kira Division Police and is expected to appear in court tomorrow. Reports further indicate that investigators are considering adding him to a treason-related case, although authorities had not publicly provided full details of the alleged charges by the time of reporting.
The dramatic developments stem from a dispute involving Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Lukwago had reportedly sought to serve legal documents connected to statements allegedly made by the army chief regarding opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. The move sparked a heated confrontation that eventually resulted in Lukwago’s arrest.
The incident has generated intense debate among lawyers, politicians, civil society activists, and members of the public. Many legal experts argue that serving court documents is part of a lawyer’s professional responsibilities and should not expose legal practitioners to arrest or intimidation. They insist that legal processes must be respected regardless of the status or position of the individuals involved.
Supporters of Lukwago have condemned the arrest, describing it as an attack on the legal profession and the rule of law. They argue that lawyers should be free to represent their clients and pursue legal action without interference. Several opposition supporters have also questioned the decision to detain one of Uganda’s most prominent lawyers over actions they believe fall within his professional duties.
On the other hand, some supporters of Gen Muhoozi have defended the actions of security agencies, arguing that the matter should be left to investigators and the courts. They maintain that all individuals must be subjected to the law and that the judiciary will ultimately determine the facts surrounding the case.
As news of Lukwago’s detention spread, social media platforms were flooded with reactions from Ugandans expressing differing opinions on the matter. Some demanded his immediate release, while others called for patience until court proceedings reveal more details about the allegations.
The case has once again placed Gen Muhoozi at the centre of national political discussion, with many observers viewing the latest developments as part of the growing tensions between government officials and opposition figures.
With Lukwago expected in court tomorrow, attention is now focused on what charges may be formally presented and whether the reported treason allegations will form part of the proceedings. The hearing is expected to attract significant public interest as Ugandans await further clarity on a case that continues to generate controversy and debate across the country.
