The Kampala Metropolitan Police has carried out a major intelligence-led operation targeting suspected motorcycle theft and rebranding networks operating within the Kampala Metropolitan Area. The operation resulted in the recovery of 44 motorcycles and the arrest of 13 suspects.
According to police spokesperson Kawala Rachael, the operation was conducted on 17 June 2026 at around 5:00 p.m. at Nakati Garage and Washing Bay, a facility located in Nabbingo Ward within Kyengera Town Council.
Police say the operation followed a tip-off suggesting that the garage was being used as a center for dismantling suspected stolen motorcycles. Investigators allege that stolen bikes were being taken apart, reassembled, repainted, and fitted with forged number plates before being returned to the streets for resale or circulation.
The raid was carried out in Wakiso District as part of a wider crackdown on organized motorcycle theft networks that have been operating across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Officers reportedly moved in after gathering intelligence that linked the facility to repeated cases of stolen motorcycle trafficking.
During the operation, police arrested 13 suspects believed to be involved in different roles within the network, including dismantling, transport, reassembly, and distribution of the motorcycles. The recovered 44 motorcycles are now being held as evidence as investigators work to verify ownership and trace victims.
Authorities say the operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal gangs that rely on boda boda networks to facilitate theft and resale of stolen motorcycles. Police have also indicated that more arrests could follow as investigations continue to uncover additional links in the network.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious garages or workshops suspected of handling stolen motorcycles, saying community cooperation is key in fighting organized crime in the region.
