Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested a 36-year-old man after recovering ammunition, military-style items, and uniforms during an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division. The arrest has sparked fresh investigations into the source of the recovered exhibits and the whereabouts of a firearm that police believe may still be missing.
The suspect, identified as Prosper Turinawe, is a driver attached to a private security company and a resident of Kyebando Central. According to police, the operation began after authorities received information from members of the public about a man who had allegedly been seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.
Following the tip-off, officers from Wandegeya Police Station launched an operation to track down the suspect. Investigators established that Turinawe had been staying at a lodge in the area. However, when police first attempted to arrest him, he reportedly managed to evade capture. Determined to follow up on the intelligence, officers continued monitoring his movements until they intercepted him at around 6:00 a.m. on June 21, 2026.
Police say the suspect was found in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition at the time of his arrest. The discovery prompted officers to carry out a search at his residence in Kyebando Central, where they recovered a number of additional items. Among the exhibits recovered were about 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from different organisations.
The recovery of the items has raised questions about how they were obtained and what they may have been intended for. Investigators believe the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used as a storage point for the recovered materials. Authorities are now working to establish whether other individuals could be linked to the case.
Turinawe has since been charged with possession of government stores and remains in police custody. Detectives are continuing their inquiries to determine the origin of the ammunition and other exhibits. They are also trying to trace a firearm that remains unaccounted for and which may provide further clues about the case.
Police have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found connected to the recovered items will face the law. Kampala Metropolitan Police have also urged residents to remain alert and continue sharing information about suspicious activities in their communities, noting that public cooperation remains crucial in fighting crime and maintaining security.
