The Anti-Corruption Court has remanded the Accountant of National Teachers’ College (NTC) Kaliro, Okiria Clement Epalat, to Luzira Prison over allegations of causing a financial loss of Shs121 million to the Government of Uganda.
Okiria, 55, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Esther Asiimwe on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court remanded him until August 12, 2026, when he is expected to return for the mention of his case and hearing of his bail application.
The Inspectorate of Government (IGG) charged Okiria jointly with the Principal of NTC Kaliro, Evelyn Grace Lanyero, with abuse of office and causing financial loss amounting to Shs121 million. The two officials are currently on interdiction as investigations and court proceedings continue.
According to the prosecution, Ms. Lanyero first appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court last year. She was remanded before later being released on bail. However, Okiria remained at large for nearly a year before he was arrested on July 31, 2026.
The court has now scheduled the case for pre-trial on September 10, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., when both accused persons are expected to appear as the case moves to the next stage.
The prosecution was led by William Moses Ntumwa, a Principal Inspectorate Officer from the Inspectorate of Government, who represented the state in the Anti-Corruption Court.
The case is part of the Inspectorate of Government’s continued efforts to fight corruption, abuse of office and financial mismanagement in public institutions as authorities seek to protect public resources and strengthen accountability across government agencies.
