Senior officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) preparing to retire have been encouraged to strengthen their financial management skills and make wise investment decisions to ensure a stable and comfortable life after leaving military service.
The advice was shared during a financial literacy training held at the Defence Intelligence and Security Headquarters in Mbuya. The training brought together experts from the Bank of Uganda and Britam, who equipped the officers with practical financial knowledge to help them transition successfully into retirement.
Speaking during the training, the Joint Staff Human Resource Management, Major General James Kinalwa, reminded the officers that retirement comes with significant changes in income and lifestyle. He noted that many of the benefits they have enjoyed during active service, including monthly salaries, allowances and other facilitation, would come to an end after retirement.
Maj Gen Kinalwa urged the officers to prepare for this transition by making sound financial decisions and investing in ventures that can provide a steady source of income. He warned that poor planning often forces retirees to sell their valuable assets to meet daily expenses, a situation that can be avoided through proper financial management.
Bank of Uganda official Mr Hashim Kirungi described financial literacy as an important life skill that everyone should embrace. He encouraged the officers to review their spending habits by separating essential needs from unnecessary wants, setting realistic financial goals and closely monitoring both their income and expenditure.
Mr Kirungi also advised the officers to develop a strong saving culture by putting money aside immediately after receiving income instead of waiting to save what remains after spending. He explained that consistent savings create the capital needed to start sustainable businesses and handle unexpected financial challenges.
He further cautioned the officers against borrowing money to start businesses, saying new ventures come with risks that could leave retirees struggling to repay loans if the businesses fail. Instead, he encouraged them to use their savings and retirement benefits wisely when investing.
On retirement packages, Mr Kirungi urged the officers not to rush into major financial decisions immediately after receiving their benefits. He advised them to remain calm, take time to plan carefully and also pay attention to their health, family and personal relationships so they can enjoy a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.
Another Bank of Uganda facilitator, Mr Arnold Bagubwagye, introduced the officers to Treasury Bills as a safe investment option. He explained that government securities offer retirees a secure way of earning returns while preserving their capital.
Britam Business Development Manager Mr Ronald Mugabi also encouraged the officers to plan for retirement using SMART goals, ensuring their objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. He reminded them that after dedicating years to protecting the country, they should now focus on protecting the wealth they have earned through careful financial planning.
Speaking on behalf of the retiring officers, Colonel Okei Rukogota thanked the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and the UPDF leadership for organising the training. He encouraged his fellow officers to put the lessons into practice by investing wisely, creating sustainable sources of income and maintaining healthy lifestyles through regular exercise.
The training was attended by retiring senior officers, officials from the Joint Staff Human Resource Management, and financial literacy experts from the Bank of Uganda and Britam, highlighting the UPDF’s commitment to preparing its officers for a successful and financially secure retirement.
