The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has started retirement ceremonies for personnel under Batch 16, marking a major transition in the lives of officers and soldiers who have served the country for many years.
According to a statement from the UPDF Department of Defence Public Information, a total of 205 junior officers and 1,364 militants will officially retire from different formations and units across the country. The retirement marks the end of their active military careers and celebrates their contribution to protecting Uganda’s sovereignty and security.
The UPDF said the ceremonies are part of its long-standing tradition of recognising service, sacrifice, discipline, and patriotism among its members. The retiring personnel will be honoured for their commitment and dedication throughout their years of service.
The force also announced that 222 senior officers will retire on 12 August 2026 during a special ceremony to be held at the UPDF Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala. The event will recognise their leadership, professional achievements, and contribution towards strengthening the UPDF and supporting regional peace and stability.
The UPDF described the retirement of both junior and senior personnel as an important moment that reflects the values of duty, honour, and patriotism that guide the institution.
The force further revealed that the official send-off ceremony for 19 general officers will be announced at a later date. The UPDF said their retirement will be marked with the respect and dignity befitting their years of service at the highest levels of command.
The UPDF continues to emphasise its commitment to building a professional, disciplined, and modern military force. The retirement of Batch 16 personnel comes as part of the institution’s efforts to maintain a structured system of career transition while preparing for future generations of military leadership.
