Besigye, Lutale Case Adjourned Until May 21

Must read

Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court has sent back the four time presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and his colleague Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya back to Luzira prison until May 21 2025.

Besigye and Lutale were brought back to court under tight security with the courtroom occupied by his legal team led by senior counsel and former Kenya Justice minister Marth Karua, Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, recently bailed human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza, prosecution legal team and Besigye supporters.

The prosecutors accused Dr. Kizza Besigye’s defense team of stalling the treason case investigation, while the defense countered that the prosecution was delaying a fair trial, amid disputes over a private cross-examination.

However, the defence maintains that their revision application is currently before the High Court, pending a decision.

Besigye and Lutale legal team has accused State Attorney Richard Birivumbuka of playing to the gallery without presenting satisfying evidence in the treason case against the duo.

According to the prosecution, the accused, alongside others still at large, conspired between 2003 and November 2024 in multiple international cities—Geneva (Switzerland), Athens (Greece), Nairobi (Kenya), and Kampala (Uganda)—to unlawfully overthrow the Government of Uganda through force of arms.

The State alleges that the conspiracy was not merely theoretical, but actively expressed through utterances and overt acts aimed at destabilizing the constitutional order.
