Clear the Road! Government Orders Car Dealers Off Busy Highway

Must read

The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) of the Republic of Usana has announced a major move to clear the Nakawa-Banda-Kireka section of the Kampala-Jinja Highway. This decision targets all car dealers and car bond operators who have set up businesses within the road reserve — an area that is supposed to remain clear for road safety, drainage, and expansion purposes.

According to the Ministry, these car bonds have caused serious problems. They have contributed to heavy traffic congestion, blocked drainage systems, and created dangers for road users. This situation goes against Section 16(1) of the Roads Act, 2019, which clearly states that road reserves must not be used for private business activities.

To address the problem, the Ministry is giving all car bond operators a 30-day grace period to voluntarily vacate the area. This grace period starts on 27th June 2025. During this time, all affected individuals and companies are expected to remove their cars, structures, and any installations from the road reserve.

If the operators fail to comply within the given period, the Ministry will move in and evict them. The removal of structures will be done at the cost of the owners. The Permanent Secretary, Bageya Waiswa, emphasized that this action is necessary to improve road safety, reduce traffic jams, and ensure the proper flow of water through drainage systems.

This operation shows the government’s commitment to making roads safer and more efficient for all users. The Ministry urges everyone affected to cooperate during this period to avoid further losses and disruptions.
