Campaign fever has officially hit parishes across the country as campaigns for Special Interest Group (SIG) elections begin today, Monday, 30th June. This new phase of elections will see nominated candidates competing for positions on parish-level committees representing the youth, older persons, and persons with disabilities (PwDs).
The campaign period will run for a full week, ending on 5th July. Candidates are expected to use this time to present their ideas, connect with voters, and explain how they will represent their groups if elected. These elections aim to give a voice to groups that are often underrepresented in decision-making spaces.
The actual voting day is scheduled for 7th July. On this day, voters from the respective interest groups will go to polling centers in their parishes to elect their leaders. This is a critical moment for many communities, especially those seeking leaders who will push for inclusion, empowerment, and better services.
Officials from the Electoral Commission have reminded candidates to conduct peaceful campaigns and follow all the election guidelines. Voters are also being urged to participate fully in this process and choose leaders who truly understand their needs.
The Special Interest Group elections are part of a broader effort to promote inclusive governance and ensure that every section of society has a voice in leadership. As campaigns begin, excitement and anticipation are growing in many communities, with hopes high for a brighter, more inclusive future.
