The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced the promotion of three senior officers in the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), recognizing their hard work, commitment, and years of service to the nation. The promotions mark another key step in shaping the leadership of Uganda’s military.
Major General Francis Okello, who has been serving as the Commandant of the National Defence College (NDC), has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. This comes as he prepares for retirement in July 2024. His long and distinguished career has seen him play a major role in training senior officers and contributing to Uganda’s national security strategy. His elevation to Lieutenant General is seen as a fitting send-off for a dedicated officer whose service has left a lasting legacy.
Also promoted is Colonel Geoffrey Karugaba, Uganda’s Defence Attaché to the United Kingdom. He now becomes Brigadier General. In his diplomatic role, Brig. Gen. Karugaba has been key in strengthening Uganda’s military cooperation with other countries, especially within the United Kingdom. His promotion highlights the importance of defence diplomacy in modern military strategy.
In addition, Colonel Paddy Ankunda, a familiar name to many Ugandans as the former UPDF spokesperson, has also been promoted to Brigadier General. Currently, he serves as the Assistant Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, in charge of International Affairs. His new rank reflects the growing responsibilities he carries in overseeing Uganda’s defence intelligence on a global scale.
These promotions signal a continued shift in leadership within the UPDF, guided by General Muhoozi’s vision for a professional and modern army. As Uganda prepares for the future, these officers—both retiring and continuing in service—stand as strong examples of discipline, loyalty, and excellence in military service.
