In a surprising move that has shaken Uganda’s political scene, Dr. Lulume Bayiga, the Member of Parliament for Buikwe South, has officially left the Democratic Party (DP) and joined the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF).
Bayiga, a longtime member and strong supporter of the Democratic Party, has been known for his outspoken views and dedication to democratic values. His decision to switch political sides comes as a shock to many of his supporters and fellow DP members. He has represented Buikwe South for years under the DP ticket and was considered one of the party’s most loyal and respected voices.
While addressing a small crowd of supporters during the announcement, Bayiga said his decision was based on his belief that Uganda needs a stronger and more united opposition. He believes the People’s Front for Freedom offers a fresh vision and bold leadership that aligns more closely with the political change Ugandans have been asking for.
“I still respect the Democratic Party,” Bayiga said, “but I have made this choice because I believe the PFF is more prepared to challenge the current government and fight for the freedoms of our people.”
The People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) is a growing political movement that aims to bring together different opposition voices to challenge the ruling party. Bayiga’s move is seen as a boost for the new party and could attract more prominent figures to join the alliance.
However, not everyone is happy. Some leaders in the Democratic Party have expressed disappointment, calling Bayiga’s defection a betrayal. Others argue that such moves weaken the opposition instead of strengthening it. Still, many political analysts say Bayiga’s switch may spark fresh energy within the opposition camp ahead of future elections.
As the news spreads, all eyes are now on other DP members and whether this will trigger a wave of defections. One thing is clear—Lulume Bayiga’s move marks a major shift in Uganda’s political landscape, and the coming months may bring even more surprises.
