Authorities in Uganda have taken a firm stand against corruption and job fraud in public offices. Tumusiime Julian, a secretary in the Health Department of Kyankwanzi District, has been charged and arraigned before the Kyankwanzi Magistrates Court. The charges brought against her include obtaining money by false pretence and demanding money by menaces.
According to the prosecution, Tumusiime, with the intention of cheating, took UGX 5 million from a desperate job seeker. The victim had hoped to secure a nursing job within the Kyankwanzi Local Government. Tumusiime reportedly promised to help the individual get the job, a promise that turned out to be false.
Investigations carried out by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working together with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), revealed that this was not an isolated case. It appears Tumusiime, together with other unidentified individuals who are still on the run, has been running a job scam targeting many job seekers in the district.
This arrest sends a strong message that public servants who abuse their positions for personal gain will face the law. The court has since remanded Tumusiime to prison until 22nd July 2025 as investigations continue. Authorities are still hunting for her accomplices and have urged any other victims to come forward.
This case has sparked discussions on the urgent need for transparency and fairness in recruitment processes within government institutions. It also highlights how job desperation is being taken advantage of by unethical individuals in power.
