Government Suspends LC I Leaders From Handling Land Deals During Election Period

Must read

The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has issued a public notice advising members of the public to temporarily avoid involving LC I Chairpersons who are currently campaigning in any land-related transactions until the ongoing Local Council I election process is completed.

The Ministry said the decision is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the integrity of land transactions during the election period and reducing cases of fraud, disputes and irregularities that may arise during the transition.

According to the notice issued on July 16, 2026, LC I Chairpersons who are participating in the election campaigns have been asked not to witness, approve, recommend, endorse or oversee any land transactions until the electoral process comes to an end.

The public has been specifically advised not to rely on campaigning LC I leaders for activities such as buying or selling land, signing land agreements, verifying land ownership, handling boundary issues or any other matters that require local administrative involvement.

The Ministry explained that the restriction is intended to prevent possible conflicts of interest and ensure that land dealings remain transparent and fair during the sensitive election period. It urged citizens to exercise caution and avoid making decisions that could later lead to costly disputes.

For people with urgent land matters, the Ministry encouraged them to seek assistance from qualified legal practitioners or use other lawful procedures instead of depending on LC I leaders who are actively involved in campaigns.

The Ministry of Lands further called upon the public to remain patient until the elections are concluded, saying the temporary measure will help safeguard the rights and interests of all parties involved in land transactions.

The Ministry thanked citizens for their cooperation and encouraged them to continue following official guidance as the country goes through the Local Council I election period.
