Uganda’s Electoral Commission has taken a significant step in building transparency and international cooperation as the country moves closer to its 2025/2026 General Elections. On this important journey, the Commission met with Ambassadors and Heads of Diplomatic Missions accredited to Uganda to share updates and preparations ahead of the polls.
The high-level meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala. It was attended by various envoys representing countries and international organizations with an interest in Uganda’s democratic process. The main aim was to brief the diplomats on how far the Electoral Commission has gone in preparing for the elections and to discuss the next steps.
Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, led the discussions. He presented key milestones already achieved under the Election Roadmap. Among these achievements were the successful update of the national voters’ register, planning for nomination of candidates, and readiness for upcoming political activities that are part of the democratic calendar. He also talked about what lies ahead in the coming months, leading up to polling in early 2026.
The meeting sent a strong message about the Commission’s commitment to openness and cooperation with the international community. It also highlighted Uganda’s dedication to holding free, fair, and peaceful elections. Diplomats welcomed the updates and appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from the Electoral Commission.
This engagement is part of a wider effort by the Commission to build trust, ensure transparency, and encourage support from stakeholders both within and outside Uganda. As the country approaches a crucial democratic event, such dialogue helps to strengthen partnerships and maintain confidence in the electoral process.
